Interview - Dj Skae!

Hey Skae, first up cheers for taking some time out to answer a few questions.
Do you wanna start by telling people how long you've been involved with the Australian hip-hop and graffiti scene for?
I have been involved in hip hop for about 20 years now and hope to be for the next 20 years!

What would you say first got you into hip hop?
I first got into hip hop when I got some tapes off my older sister's friend. Then I saw Beat Street and it just grew from the music to the culture.

Who would you pin to be some of your biggest influences, whether it is for your music or your art?
My biggest influences would be my old crew, Westline, when it comes to painting. My music influences come from Mixmaster Mike and Qbert and DMC battle videos/DVD's.

You released DJ Skaes Guest list earlier this year, want to tell us a little about that and how it all came to be?
I have known many artists in the local hip hop scene for many years from either working with them or supporting them. When I started Djing many people said to me I should get a compilation album together as I already have the relationship and respect of many upcoming and established acts. After a few years of DJing I decided I was ready and that this would actually be a great idea to promote the talent coming out of Sydney.

Can we expect a follow up release at some stage?
Yes, I am currently working on my producing skills. I am producing beats now and hope to release a follow up to this album with a range of MC's and DJ's from around Australia over my beats.

Who in your opinion do you think people should be keeping an ear out for in the near future??
I definitely think people should listen out for when Sceptic and Dseeva drop there next album "Ghostwriters" as it is going to be banging and also recommend checking out Fortay and his crew.

Do you think the internet has assisted or hindered in the growth of hip hop in Australia?
Definitely assisted. The internet has brought much underground music to the ears of many people who would have never heard it before and created new fans and musicians.

Can you name 3 writers whom you would really like to get on a wall with?
I'd like to rock a wall with Seen, Scram and Taven. Can we make it a train instead?
